The signing of the Agreement of Cooperation was held at the University of Rijeka Rectorate on Wednesday, December 14th, 2016. The Agreement was signed between the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb and the University of Rijeka, whereas the signatories were the Director of the Institute, Professor Branislava Baranović, Ph.D., and the UNIRI Rector, Professor Pero Lučin, M.D., Ph.D.
The Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Associate Professor Ines Srdoč Konestra, Ph.D., Professor Bojana Ćulum, Ph.D., from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Department of Education Science and Nikola Baketa from the Centre for Youth and Gender Studies in Zagreb were also in attendance.
With this Agreement the collaboration between the University of Rijeka and the Institute for Social Research is being established to advance educational, scientific and organizational activity. They will cooperate in the organization and implementation of study programmes and lifelong learning programmes, as well as in the projects concerned with improving the quality of educational process and work on strengthening the visibility of the University of Rijeka and the Institute.
“We persistently claim that our town’s development also depends upon the concentration of cultural and creative capital. We work hard on increasing the number of scientists in that direction. Social capital is of great importance for the society to develop. What we do, we don’t do on our own. We accomplish it through strategic partnerships with the best ones. The cooperation between the Institute and the University already exists in numerous projects and today we are making this cooperation official. By researching social occurrences, especially by changing the education system, I want to turn Rijeka into a center of knowledge and creativity. We are trying to systematize the education programme for leadership in education with the University of Georgia (USA). We believe that we will, in addition to collaborating on projects, “storm ahead” towards European projects in the near future,” stated Rector Lučin.
“This is a formalization of the cooperation that already exists for many years. I am emphasizing the project HEISEE (the Higher Education Initiative for Southeastern Europe) and we also cooperated on the project Erasmus. It is extremely important for the development of society to rely on empirically grounded knowledge, to work on improving youth and their education and to develop scientific research and education as well. The Institute has a long tradition in studying the youth, from the year 1964 when the Institute was founded, and we have a rich database on the young. I am very pleased to sign this Agreement precisely with the University of Rijeka which is known for its openness to new ideas,” added Director Baranović.
“We are signing a strategic partnership with an institution which is excellent in the humanities and social studies. The education programme on youth and leadership in education is planned to be implemented at the UNIRI Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. We are increasingly becoming obliged to reach the European standard and we have to work on the youth. We are the first ones in Croatia who plan to initiate the education on youth and the programme entitled “Youth in Contemporary Society” should be accredited during the next year and should begin as a pilot project.”, concluded the UNIRI Vice-Rector for Studies and Students, Professor Snježana Prijić-Samaržija, Ph.D., who is also the coordinator in the cooperation with the Institute.
