New Joint Study Program ''Tourism''

The Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management of the University of Rijeka and the Faculty of Economics of the University of Sarajevo signed a Consortium Agreement on the implementation of the joint university graduate (master) study program "Tourism" on April 12, 2018.

The Agreement was signed by Prof. Dora Smolčić Jurdana, Ph.D., UNIRI Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management Dean, and Prof. Kemal Kozarić, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Economics in Sarajevo, in the presence of Prof. Sanja Barić, Ph.D., Vice-Rector for Studies and Students of the University of Rijeka.

The signing of the joint contract is the result of mutual cooperation between the respective Faculties, initiated in 2016 by signing the General Agreement on Cooperation. The Consortium Agreement is a prerequisite for the accreditation of a joint graduate study program that will enable students to acquire contemporary theoretical and applicative knowledge and skills needed to carry out professional tasks in the field of Tourism and Hospitality, as well as to continue their education within the European educational space.

The study program is devised as a two-year graduate (master) program, during which the students will gain 120 ECTS credits, and the courses will be jointly conducted by professors from both institutions.

Professor Kozarić explained the needs of the tourism market of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is increasingly opening up, and there is not enough highly educated staff. In addition, he announced that students from Sarajevo will do their traineeship practice in tourist facilities, agencies and institutions in Opatija, Rijeka and Primorsko-goranska County in the last semester of the study program.

Professor Dora Smolčić Jurdana, UNIRI Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management Dean, explained that the students will gain double qualifications upon completion of this graduate study program, in the Republic of Croatia and in Bosnia and Herzegovina. By launching such a program, respective Faculties and Universities will make a significant contribution to the development and strengthening of the competitiveness of their own institutions in the area of higher education throughout the region, improving the quality of studying, internationalizing their universities, and enhancing national economies.
