The University of Rijeka is pleased to announce the Call for applications for the third generation of Urban Studies, a postgraduate study program at the University of Rijeka. Urban Studies offers a unique insight into the spatial and strategic design of complex urban systems, phenomena, and transformations enrolled in the artistic interdisciplinary field of Science and Art.
Intended for everybody whose research or practice influences the built and programmed environment, strategic planning, infrastructural capacities, or collective imaginaries, Urban Studies provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary education necessary for a meaningful contribution to the development of open, inclusive, and resilient urban systems in the context of contemporary political, ecological, and technological crises.
The study program is focused on hybridity, resilience, networks, adaptability, complexity, unpredictability, and heritage in the states of crisis, with the aim of understanding and developing design-driven approaches to challenges of urban futures. While these focuses permeate all the educational contents of the study, they are crucially exemplified through the practical tasks of research and methodological testing on the specific problem through the thematic focus of the generation.
Each generation of Urban Studies participants engages with a specific urban condition, confronting the real needs of contemporary cities and spaces, as well as their desirable and possible futures within a defined context.
The third generation will explore the concept of the city-state through the relationships between city and port, city and territory, and the idea of the ideal city. Thus, the program seeks to contribute to shaping a more livable, just, human-centered, and even artistic collage of cities, land, and the sea.
The program is developed and conducted by the Center for Urban Transition, Architecture and Urbanism (DeltaLab) at the University of Rijeka.
