The UNIRI Faculty of Law, through its Center for Sports Law, Sports Policies and Sports Diplomacy and the Jean Monnet Chair for EU Sports Law, Policy & Diplomacy, in cooperation with the prestigious association of sports experts Sport&EU Association, organized a roundtable discussion and debate on Monday, December 19, 2022, elaborating on the opinions of the Advocate General in the cases European Superleague (C-333/21) and International Skating Union (C-124/21 P), which are pending before the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, and which were published on December 15, 2022. The final decision of the Court will be published in the spring of 2023.
The participants were greeted by the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Vesna Crnić-Grotić, Ph.D., and Dr. Borja Garcia Garcia from Loughborough University – UK, Executive Director of the Sport&EU Association.
Speakers at the included Dr. Katarina Pijetlović, author of the first book on breakaway leagues, such as the so-called Superleague from Manchester Metropolitan University – UK, Professor Miguel Poiares Maduro, former Advocate General of the European Court in Luxembourg, now Dean of Catolica Global School of Law – Portugal and professor of the European University Institute – Italy, Roy Vermeer, Head of Legal Department of FIFPro (World Union of Professional Footballers), Stuart Dykes, member of the Board of Directors of Football Supporters Europe, Benoit Keane, Founder of Keane Legal – Belgium and member of the legal team representing UEFA in the case of the so-called Superleague, as well as the hosts and organizers, i.e. Dr. Borja Garcia Garcia and Assoc. Prof. Vanja Smokvina, Ph.D., head of the Center and the Jean Monnet Chair at the Faculty of Law.
The meeting took place exclusively online and gathered more than 300 participants from all over the world.
