UNIRI’s consistent progress in Gender Equality (SDG 5):
• 2023: 99th out of 1,081 universities
• 2024: 82nd out of 1,361
• 2025: 37th out of 1,559
We feel proud, grateful, and responsible.
Thank you to everyone – at the University of Rijeka and beyond – who rightfully shares in this recognition.
At the same time, we acknowledge that global rankings do not mean that the challenges of gender equality have been resolved – neither within universities nor in the societies they shape and serve. Higher education today operates in a complex landscape where gender inequalities intersect with socio-economic, generational, and other forms of structural injustice.
In this context, universities bear responsibility not only for ensuring fair access to knowledge and resources within their institutions, but also for actively contributing to social change. Our ongoing task is to strengthen systems and cultures that view gender equality and intersectional justice not as temporary interventions, but as core conditions for the educational, scientific, and civic mission of the university.
In the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2025, published on June 18, 2025, the University of Rijeka is ranked between 301st and 400th place out of a total of 2,526 universities worldwide included in the ranking. While most other ranking systems assess universities based on their performance in core activities – education, research, knowledge transfer, and internationalization – the THE Impact Rankings measure universities’ commitment to and achievements in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The University of Rijeka submitted evidence of its commitment to as many as 12 out of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, achieving its best results not only in Gender Equality, but also in the following goals: Quality Education, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Life Below Water, and No Poverty.
