Debunking 24 myths of Research Assessment with YERUN’s Research Assessment Advent Calendar!

This year, YERUN is counting down to the holidays with something special: a Research Assessment Advent Calendar. From 1 to 24 December, a digital “door” opens every day to reveal a myth about research assessment, and the truth that debunks it.

The calendar is fully interactive, so you can tap each tile to explore it directly on your phone or computer. Behind every number, you’ll find a short “myth & truth” pair, ready to read and share with colleagues.

The content is co-created with the CoARA Working Groups on research assessment. It draws on the work of Working Group on Ethics and Research Integrity Policy for Responsible Research Assessment in Data and Artificial Intelligence (ERIP), Working Group on Multilingualism and Language Biases in Research Assessment, Working Group on Experiments in Assessment, Thinking Critically about University Rankings Network (TURN) Working Group, Working Group TIER – Towards an Inclusive Evaluation of Research, and Working Group SAGA – Supporting the Alignment of Research Assessment Systems with CoARA in Biomedical Disciplines through Administrative Reforms and Governance.

Through their combined efforts, the Working Groups bring together experiences from different countries, disciplines and types of organisations. They turn discussions, pilots and lessons learned into clear, concise messages that show why common assumptions about research assessment are misleading, and what fairer, more meaningful practices can look like in reality.

This initiative builds on YERUN’s earlier Advent of Open Science calendar, which helped bust myths around Open Science and point researchers towards useful resources. This new edition focuses on how research and researchers are evaluated, from publications and data to teaching, engagement and leadership.

We invite you to open a new tile every day, and take a moment to consider it. Small daily steps can help shift how we think, talk about and ultimately do research assessment.
