Summary: Multilingualism, that is, the regular use of more than one language or dialect in everyday life, is a very common phenomenon that brings a number of lifelong social, linguistic and cognitive advantages. Nevertheless, it is still associated with doubts, misconceptions and prejudices, which can have very harmful consequences for the individual and society. In this lecture, common misconceptions about multilingualism will be presented and refuted in the light of research-based evidence. It will be explained what the social, linguistic and cognitive advantages of multilingualism are and why it is important to encourage it at all ages. Finally, the importance of having accurate and scientifically based information about multilingualism will be highlighted, and the activities of Bilingualism Matters@Rijeka, the branch of not-for-profit organisation Bilingualism Matters from Edinburgh, United Kingdom, hosted by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Rijeka, Croatia, will be briefly presented.
