On Wednesday, October 15 at 12pm (CET) professor Marija Brala Vukanović, PhD from Department of English Studies at The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka, will have a lecture Lost in Translation: Between Language Diversity and Relativism.

Language is more than just a way of communication – it shapes our perception and understanding of the world. In this fun and interactive lecture, we will explore the fascinating language diversity, from how different cultures describe time and space, to the way words shape our emotions and our perception of reality. Through surprising facts and striking examples, we will discover the power of language to shape thinking and learn how being lost in translation can actually reveal new ways of seeing the world.
About lecturer
Marija Brala-Vukanović is Full Professor of English Linguistics at the University of Rijeka, Croatia. She earned her B.A. in Translation (English–Italian–Croatian) at the University of Trieste, Italy and went on to complete her M.Phil. and Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge, U.K., specializing in Applied Linguistics and Cognitive Semantics. During her doctoral research, she was a guest scholar at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen.
Her prolific research output includes more than 50 peer-reviewed papers, three monographs, and five edited volumes, making significant contributions to the fields of cognitive semantics, psycholinguistics, and intercultural pragmatics. She also serves as a reviewer for prominent international and national journals.
Beyond academia, she is dedicated to engaging wider audiences by communicating the insights of linguistics to non-specialist communities, reinforcing the societal impact of cognitive and applied language research.
