This October thanks to YUFE, you can gain knowledge from a reliable source in a truly European classroom, both onsite and online. YUFE Academy autumn edition brings many topics, such as climate change, linguistic relativism and intercultural communication, online learning, etc. University of Rijeka participates in two events.
On Thursday, 23 October at 4 pm (CET) at the City Library of Rijeka (Benčić), the YUFE Academy joins forces with the YUFE International Café, so you can join the lecture and workshop Say What?! Understanding Communication through Culture. The event takes place simultaneously in the four countries of YUFE alliance, in Finland, Spain, Poland and Croatia.
Are words enough to communicate?
We will be finding this out at a hybrid event where learn to understand how cultural “codes” influence our expectations, behaviors, and interactions. The event begins with a lecture introducing major models of intercultural communication and examples such as high vs. low context communication, direct vs. indirect feedback, or affective vs. neutral styles.
We will then take part in interactive workshops, using self-assessment, group discussions, practical exercises and scenario analysis to explore how cultural differences affect our own experiences in academic and professional life. The session concludes with a joint wrap-up, sharing insights and strategies for more inclusive and effective communication across cultures.
Theory in practice
The session is led by Małgorzata Grudzińska from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Poland. Małgorzata is a trainer and a mentor with over 20 years of experience in international academic settings.
This event is part of the YUFE International Café – a new initiative where university students, staff, and other citizens come together to share cultural experiences and practices. It’s a space to connect, learn from each other, and discover how diverse perspectives shape the way we see the world.
To participate in the City Library register via this link, but if you wish to participate exclusively online, please register here.
Participation in the YUFE Academy is free with mandatory registration for each event. Join the program of open lectures led by top professors and experts from YUFE partner universities. The entire program and additional information about the YUFE academy can be found at the link.
“I liked the intergenerational aspect of the discussion following the lecture… being included in such diversified group age wise, allows mare discussion between every generation on global issues and how to solve them.”
