YUFE Annual Strategic Forum

10.03.2026. / news / YUFE Alliance

This year’s YUFE Strategic Forum, hosted by Maastricht University, welcomed stakeholders from across the YUFE community – rectors, Student Forum Executive Board, institutional coordinators, and YUFE task leaders – to reflect on the achievements thus far and discuss the next steps toward a more connected, inclusive, and resilient European higher education landscape.

During the two-day gathering, the participants exchanged their views on the future of European university alliances, the development of joint study programmes, and the further strengthening of international academic cooperation. Meetings in Maastricht, the place where the YUFE initiative began its journey back in 2019, focused on key strategic issues for YUFE’s further development – from long-term partnership strategy and institutional integration to the development of new joint study programs and ensuring the financial sustainability of YUFE.

The Forum was held at a very important time for YUFE, i.e., in the week when YUFE officially submitted its application for a new two-year European funding. It is expected that the continued support at the European level will enable the further development of joint study programmes, student and researcher mobility, and new projects connecting universities, local communities, and the economy.

YUFE is one of the first European university alliances launched as part of the European Commission’s initiative to develop European Universities, which aims to create an integrated European higher education area. Such a model allows for greater mobility for students and researchers, participation in joint study programmes, and stronger connections between universities and society and the economy.

This year’s Strategic Forum, with a symbolic motto “Dreaming Europe”, emphasized the members’ shared vision of an open and connected European academic space. In this context, the lecture “Trinational Cooperation: Maastricht Model”, held by UM professor Gideon Koekoek was particularly interesting. When discussing examples of cross-border academic cooperation, Koekoek highlighted the development of the Gravitational Waves and Fundamental Physics (GWFP) Research Institute, which, through international cooperation, has grown into one of the leading research centers in this field in Europe in a relatively short period.

At a time when European university alliances are playing an increasingly important role in shaping the future of higher education, YUFE continues to develop the model of an open and internationally acclaimed European university that provides students, researchers, and the community with new opportunities for collaboration, mobility, and knowledge acquisition.
