By joining the Scholars at Risk (SAR) Network, the University of Rijeka is proud to be the first university in Croatia and in the Western Balkans to join the international network of institutions and individuals whose mission it is to protect scholars and promote academic freedom.

By arranging temporary academic positions at member universities and colleges, Scholars at Risk offers safety to scholars facing grave threats, so scholars’ ideas are not lost, and they can keep working until conditions improve and they are able to return to their home countries. SAR works closely with scholars and practitioners around the world facing a variety of academic freedom and human rights violations, including professors, researchers, institutional leaders, journalists, writers, and human rights advocates.

Dr. Selma Porobić, Associate Professor at the Center for Advanced Studies of Southeast Europe, University of Rijeka, has been appointed as UNIRI’s primary representative.

The SAR network comprises 600+ institutions in 45+ countries worldwide, including universities, academic associations, non-governmental organizations, and education unions committed to protecting scholars and promoting academic freedom. By becoming a member of SAR, the University of Rijeka joins a long list of like-minded higher education institutions and educational organizations worldwide.
