Women and girls in science – not only beneficiaries, but also agents of change

11.02.2022. / news / Diversity

In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed February 11 as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This day promotes the full and equal participation of girls and women in education, specialization, work and decision-making in science; eliminating all discrimination against women, including the discrimination in the field of education and employment, as well as overcoming legal, economic, social and cultural barriers by encouraging the development of educational policies and programs, as well as school curricula in order to promote greater participation of women and girls, promote career development and recognize women’s achievements in science. Despite the large increase in women’s participation in science, the global picture continues to show insufficient and unequal representation, which is particularly evident in STEM fields.

The theme of this year’s (7th) International Day of Women and Girls in Science is “Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: Water Unites Us”. The goal of UN’s virtual meetup is to highlight and recognize the role of women and girls in science, not only as beneficiaries but also as agents of change. This year, the priority of equal contribution of women is connected to the goal of accelerating progress towards the Global Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). UN reports highlight that billions of people around the world in 2030 will not have access to drinking water for domestic and sanitary uses. The progress in this area should be quadrupled, which is also hindered by problems caused by climate changes, so a new sustainable holistic approach is needed in order to coordinate the water strategies.

By adopting a comprehensive University Gender Equality Plan 2021-2025 and carrying out the measures for its implementation through its central activities and the activities of all its components, the University of Rijeka continues to actively provide and improve equal, stimulating, and safe environments for all our scientists, students and colleagues, appreciating and respecting their diversity, strengths and potentials.

Congratulations to all women and girls scientists as we continue to empower and support them in the development of their talents, as well as their further work and creation!
