The University of Rijeka (UNIRI) is the main educational and research institution in western Croatia. Founded in 1973, UNIRI has 16 scientific-educational and artistic constituents as well as the University Library and the Student Centre. Through its Strategy for the period 2021-2025, the University implements its quantitative policies (learning and teaching, research, knowledge transfer and regional involvement, internationalization) and qualitative policies (open education, innovation in research and development, social responsibility, expanding horizons through strategic partnerships). UNIRI is part of the European University YUFE, YERUN, and several other international organisations.
The University of Rijeka is the first university in Croatia and one of the first ten in Europe to have signed “The European Charter for Researchers” and “The Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers”, thereby accepting the European Commission’s 2005 initiative to increase employability and promote research careers as vital to economic growth, employment, and the setting up of a European Research Area (ERA). We were, what is more, the first to sign the Charter for participation in the European Commission’s Group for Human Resources Strategy Implementation. By signing the above-mentioned charters, we have committed ourselves to implementing these documents at the University of Rijeka, which is a strategic goal also outlined in the current University of Rijeka Strategy. The “Strategy of Human Resources in Research” project was adopted at the University’s Senate session in October 2009, while the survey report, internal analysis, and activity report (HR Strategy for Researchers) were adopted at the Senate’s meeting in June 2010. In July 2010, the University of Rijeka received a formal acknowledgment by EC and the ‘HR Excellence in Research’ logo.
