D&I Lecture: COVID-19 pandemic and discrimination

14.01.2022. / news / Diversity

The University of Essex is proud to organize a D&I webinar on the Council of Europe’s guidelines on upholding equality and protecting against discrimination and hate during the COVID-19 pandemic and similar crises in the future.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and its social and economic effects, hit people belonging to certain groups in a particularly hard way throughout Europe. Upholding equality and protecting against discrimination and hate during the pandemic, as well as other, similar types of crisis, are key aspects and central, regional and local authorities play an important role, as well as national human rights institutions and equality bodies.

A crisis often makes more visible longstanding inequalities that existed already before its outbreak. Institutions at all levels should tackle and eliminate the structural inequalities and disadvantages to increase resilience and preparedness to future crises.

The speaker is Triantafillos Loukarelis, Chairman of the Steering Committee on Anti-Discrimination, Diversity and Inclusion (CDADI) of the Council of Europe and Direttore Generale, Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri, Dipartimento per le Pari Opportunità, UNAR -Ufficio Nazionale Antidiscriminazioni Razziali.
