First Croatian university with an International Science Council

At the founding session of the International Science Council of the University of Rijeka, held on October 20, 2023, Prof. Igor Mezić, Ph.D., a distinguished scientist from the University of California, Santa Barbara, was elected president.

The appointment of the members of the International Science Council was carried out on the proposal of the Rector of the University of Rijeka, Prof. Snježana Prijić-Samaržija, Ph.D., at the session of the University of Rijeka Senate held on May 23, 2023. This advisory body was established with the aim of monitoring and improving scientific activity and developing the University’s strategy and policy in the field of science.

Madam Rector expressed her gratitude to the members of the Council for accepting the invitation and their valuable contribution in achieving the University’s goal of becoming the university of the future. The University of Rijeka is based on a rich cultural heritage, tradition, and courage of its founders, and today, pursuing these principles, it continues its path towards strengthening scientific capacities and research, creativity, and innovation that characterize a modern European university.

After its formal constitution, the Council members agreed on the way of working and connecting with scientists and researchers of the University of Rijeka through invited lectures, conferences, and round tables. In the discussion that followed the formal part, the Council members gave their recommendations for further development of science and research at the University of Rijeka, with the aim of strengthening international cooperation, competitiveness and improving the quality of research.
