After the successful first YUFE Talk Show on universal design, hosted by the University of Rijeka, YUFE organized the second Talk Show titled Six Key Traits for a Powerful Business Vision, hosted by the University of Essex, on Wednesday, July 14, 2021. The speaker, Andy Mew, Head of Startup Support at the University of Essex, presented his stance on what one needs to have to thrive in the world of business and entrepreneurship. The talk was attended by around 40 participants from 12 different countries across Europe.

The speaker started his presentation by pointing out that vision is not about predicting the future; it’s about being equipped with the right skills to succeed. As Simon Sinek claims, clever companies and institutions change the way they present their work – they start with ‘why’, explaining their purpose.

He went on to compare leaders with managers, explaining how vision (unique and long-term) differs from goals (generic and short-term). To keep up with this 4th industrial revolution, people will need to change their mindset and constantly develop their skills and improve knowledge.

To have a powerful business vision, one needs to have some core values, creativity, leadership skills, surround themselves with tribes, growth mindset, and take action.

Andy Mew mentioned something called the regulatory focus theory (RFT), which explains people’s perceptions in the decision-making process. You can either embrace the pleasure by looking forward, or you can avoid the pain by looking back/down.
