Coursera

…for the professional and personal development of students, teachers and staff

The University of Rijeka has entered into a strategic partnership with Coursera, the leading platform for online learning, thus becoming the first university in the Republic of Croatia and in this part of Europe to enable its students, teachers and non-teaching staff through this type of cooperation to acquire the skills and competences necessary for more successful integration into a rapidly changing and competitive labor market, i.e. an opportunity for better and more efficient work with students or the performance of business tasks.

Coursera provides access to guided projects, courses, specializations and professional certification programs from more than 300 of the world’s leading universities and industries to enhance personal and professional skills and competencies.

Anyone can explore the rich content on coursera.org and try it for free with a 7-day trial, excluding certificates.

Unlimited free access to the available Coursera catalog through the UNIRI – Coursera platform is made possible through a personal four-month license, with which the University and its faculties reward their students and staff who contribute to their development and reputation. During the license period, nominated users have unlimited access to the available catalog, which allows the completion of several certificate courses and the right to an unlimited number of certificates.

Nominated licensees receive an invitation to access one of four personalized learning programs, depending on the target group they belong to – students, teaching staff, non-teaching staff and decision-makers.

Within each study program (UNIRI-Coursera for students, UNIRI-Coursera for academic staff, UNIRI-Coursera for non-academic staff and UNIRI-Coursera for management staff) there is a set of courses, specializations and guided projects recommended by the University of Rijeka in view of the needs identified through student and staff satisfaction surveys, but license users can also choose educational content from the entire Coursera catalog, which includes over 8,400 different contents.

Personal license users also have priority access to technical support, the ability to set and configure objectives and skills, and monitor their progress and skills acquired.

Personal license users, who are nominated by their faculties, are expected to earn at least one certificate during the period of license use.

Types of education on Coursera

Coursera offers various courses developed and offered by renowned universities (Illinois, Duke, Stanford, etc.) and well-known global companies (Google, IBM, Meta, etc.). Universities often offer academic courses, while companies offer courses that focus on specific skills and professional knowledge needed for the job market. In this way, students have access to diverse and relevant content, regardless of whether they want to improve their academic skills or gain practical knowledge for their career.

They usually last a few weeks, are fully online and consist of video lectures, reading assigned literature and assignments.

Specializations are a series of related individual courses designed to help the user master a specific topic or skill at their own pace. Each specialization provides a deeper understanding of a particular area and allows for a structured focus on a specific skill or thematic learning. Shorter specializations include only three (3) courses, while longer specializations may include ten (10) or more courses.

Professional Certificate programmes are designed as programmes to acquire micro-skills needed to work in the real sector. Led by experts from world-leading companies such as Google, Meta, IBM and others, these programmes enable the acquisition of key skills needed in the job market and a certificate of successfully completed programme or micro-qualification as a valuable addition to the CV.

Guided projects offer an interactive learning experience where participants can apply the acquired knowledge in real-life situations. They cover a wide range of topics and skills, such as projects in data science and machine learning (data analysis, data visualization), programming and coding (Python, Java, web design…), business and marketing, language learning projects, design and creativity projects, and many others.

The platform provides access to assessments and quizzes that reinforce understanding of the material and measure progress to ensure a comprehensive and exciting learning journey.

Recognition and evaluation of certificates obtained on Coursera

The education organized on the Coursera platform enables the acquisition of skills and competences in an informal way. After completing the planned activities as part of the training, participants receive a certificate of completion of the programme.

Certificates of completed Coursera programmes can be recognized for students, both intercurricular (partial recognition at the course level) and extracurricular (entry in the diploma supplement ).

The University of Rijeka has issued guidelines for the recognition and evaluation of certificates obtained through the Coursera platform, the primary goal of which is to develop the competences of the University of Rijeka lecturers in the recognition of learning outcomes of education conducted on the Coursera platform that are consistent with the program outcomes of studies at the University of Rijeka, and consequently to exempt students from parts of study programs at the University of Rijeka.
