The Head of the University is the Rector, who represents and manages the University, advocating for the University’s interests. The Rector presides over the University Senate and implements its decisions, and the Rector informs the Senate about his/her work. The Senate elects the Rector from among the ranks of university full professors with the scientific-teaching title. The Rector serves a four-year term with the possibility of one consecutive re-election. From its foundation until April 2017, the University of Rijeka had 13 rectors. From 2017 to 2021, the position of the University of Rijeka Rector was held by Profesor Snježana Prijić-Samaržija, Ph.D., who was elected to her second term in 2021.
