The Rector is the Head of the University who acts for, represents, and manages the University. The Rector heads the Senate and executes its decisions. S/he is accountable to the Senate for their work. The Rector’s insignia consists of the Rector’s Chain and the Rector’s sceptre. The Rector is elected by the Senate among full-time professors. The Rector is in office for a period of 4 years with the option of one consecutive re-election. The Rector is aided in his work by vice-rectors, assistants and other associates thus comprising the Rector’s Management Board. From its foundation and up to April 2017, the University has been headed by 13 rectors. In this mandate (2021 – 2025), the University of Rijeka Rector in office is Full Professor Snježana Prijić Samaržija, Ph.D.
